WHY THIS CONFERENCE IS SO CRUCIAL NOW: A LETTER FROM THE CONFERENCE DIRECTOR

In the past few years there have been land mark changes to the Energy and Utility industries; from the increased connectivity for control systems, the roll out of ‘smart’ technology, to the game changing power of Stuxnet and Night Dragon. All this has led to increased attention at national and European levels to ensure the security of critical information infrastructure.

The ubiquitous roll out of intelligent devices across the energy sector demonstrates the magnitude of investment opportunities but also the security challenges that lie ahead. Between 2010 and 2015 cumulative investment in the security sector of the utility industry will top €15bn with annual revenue in excess of €2.6bn. Added to this global expenditure on oil and gas infrastructure security in 2011 is set to reach €19bn.

The SCADA market is expected to reach €4.2bn revenue by 2016, with security being the major challenge within this sector it is vital both for the reliability of these systems and but also for economic growth to invest and develop cyber security solutions in tandem with these developments. Cyber security solutions will account for a major percentage of this total. Security measures are vital to protect our critical infrastructure from intentional and unintentional attacks and strengthen resiliency. With plans to modernize Europe’s energy infrastructure to enhance connectivity and efficiency being at €10trillion the time to invest in the European energy and security industry has never been better.

The reality of an attack was brought to shocking realization with Stuxnet last year. This has brought the issue of security to the forefront of the industry highlighting that cyber security is a matter of safety and reliability. The World Economic Forum estimates the cost of the breakdown of one critical infrastructure asset to be €175bn the stakes could not be higher. With energy being THE critical infrastructure it is essential that every effort to ensure the security of these systems is made.

Last year cyber-attacks cost the UK in excess of €30bn. With the ‘Night Dragon’ attacks targeting the energy industry, it seems likely that this cost will escalate year on year unless clear action is taken. The issue of cyber security and critical infrastructure protection is rapidly rising to the top of the agenda in many national governments, there are set to be a lot of changes in this area of the next 2 years which will be vital to keep aware of.

No one wants to be the weak link in critical infrastructure but maintaining security in a rapidly evolving industry is costly, time consuming and technically challenging. In order to overcome these issues it is essential that the public and private sector work together to build clear strategies based on best practice and forward planning. In order to successfully do this is necessary to tackle the following challenges:

  • The future landscape of rapidly changing standards
  • Understanding the persistent and evolving threats
  • Securely integrating the smart grid and connected technology
  • Ensuring a skilled workforce
  • Certification of trusted providers
  • Ascertaining what parts of your system are open
  • Bridging the gap between operational and information technology
  • Assessing your vulnerabilities
  • Understanding the risk and the threat
  • Securing your information assets
  • Protecting the open components of the system
  • System robustness and resiliency
  • Lessons learnt internationally and across industry

The Energy and Utility Cyber Security Summit will supply your business with the critical intelligence and the tools you need to build a cost effective, time efficient cyber security strategy. Delivered by the best in the industry – you’ll be able to take away key lessons and tried and tested action plans that you can implement to mitigate risk; saving you millions of Euros in security and reliability.

The Energy and Utility Cyber Security Summit will bring together 150 cyber security subject matter and industry experts for two days of business critical strategy, unrivalled networking and stimulating discussions.

With senior level representatives from major international energy and utility companies, national and pan-European government bodies, lead specialist solution provider and, expert service companies – can you afford to miss out?

The cost of breakdown of one critical infrastructure asset would be €175bn.
